The Shadow in the Spare Garage

The spare garage had one fluorescent tube and it had been dying for two years. Every few seconds it would stutter, and in that stutter the far corner would fill in — a shape the exact height of a man, standing between the water heater and the shelving.

The first month I told myself it was the shelf's shadow. Then I moved the shelf.
